Enchantment - Aura, 1B (2)
Enchant creature card in a graveyard When Animate Dead comes into play, if it's in play, it loses "enchant creature card in a graveyard" and gains "enchant creature put into play with Animate Dead." Return enchanted creature card to play under your control and attach Animate Dead to it. When Animate Dead leaves play, that creature's controller sacrifices it. Enchanted creature gets -1/-0.1
Illus. Anson Maddocks
Crystal Keep Rulings Summaries
- It follows all the rules for Aura (Enchant Creature) cards. [WotC Rules Team 1997/03/14] For example, it counts for abilities that interact with creature enchantments, such as Rabid Wombat. [Aahz 1997/06/06]
- You can Animate a creature which was discarded from a hand and therefore was never in play. [D'Angelo 1994/04/01]
- The creature comes out as if it were just played. Any X in the mana cost is zero (see Rule G24.1). So animating a Rock Hydra gives you a hydra with zero heads. [Mirage, Page 31]
- When putting a card into play that requires a definition for its value, such as with Minion of the Wastes, you do what is needed to define the value. [WotC Rules Team 1998/02/02] In the case of Minion of the Wastes, you pay life to define its values.
- The animated creature comes into play with summoning sickness (see Rule G19.39), so it cannot attack until it begins one of its controller's turns in play. [D'Angelo 1998/02/03]
- This is a targeted ability. Note that cards in the graveyard do not have Protection from Color abilities (see Rule 402.8). [D'Angelo 2002/12/19]
- If the creature card put into play has Protection from Black (or a similar effect that prevents Animate Dead from legally being attached), then it will fail to become attached and it as per Rule 212.4k, which states that an Aura trying to move onto an illegal permanent will stay where it is. Then the Animate Dead will go to the graveyard as an Aura that is not enchanting anything. This will sacrifice the creature as well, as stated by the card text. [D'Angelo 2007/10/20]
- If the creature phases out (see Rule 502.15) without the Animate Dead because Animate Dead has been affected by Spatial Binding, the Animate Dead is put into the graveyard but the creature is not. The creature will phase in perfectly normal since the Animate Dead ability did not destroy it. [Aahz 1997/02/16]
- It cannot move to a different creature using Aura moving effects. [D'Angelo 2007/09/08]
- Note - Also see Aura, Rule G1.30.
- Note - Also see Comes Into Play Abilities, Rule 410.10a.
- Note - Also see Put Into Play, Rule G16.33.
- Note - This card was of type "Enchantment" until Oracle 2007/09/01 when it became "Enchantment - Aura".
- Note - The Limited Edition, Unlimited Edition, Revised Edition, and Fourth Edition versions had this card as an Enchant Dead Creature. [D'Angelo 1997/04/11]

- Must have 2 targets at time of casting in order to be declared. [Duelist Magazine #3, Page 6]
- If one target is removed or becomes invalid after declaration, the other target is still affected. [bethmo 1994/09/15] You take the damage if at least one target is removed from the game. [D'Angelo 1995/05/17]

At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice Breeding Pit unless you pay {B}{B}. At the end of your turn, put a 0/1 black Thrull creature token into play.1 The Thrulls bred at a terrifying pace. In the end, they overwhelmed the Order of the Ebon Hand.
Illus. Adrian Smith
Crystal Keep Rulings Summaries
- Must actually be in play at the end of turn in order for you to get a Thrull. The getting of the Thrull is not part of paying the upkeep, it is part of having the card in play. [D'Angelo 1995/04/12]
- Note - Also see Token Creatures, Rule 216.

Instant, 4B (5)
Destroy target attacking nonartifact creature. It can't be regenerated. Put a black Spirit creature token into play with power and toughness equal to the power and toughness of that creature. Sacrifice the Spirit token at end of turn.1

Crystal Keep Rulings Summaries
- The Spirit token creature gets a fixed power/toughness equal to the power/toughness of the target creature when Broken Visage resolves. This includes the effects of any enchantments or other effects on the target creature. The Shadow token never gets a variable power/toughness. [D'Angelo 1995/10/29]
- The token creature comes into play under your control regardless of who controlled the target creature. [Duelist Magazine #9, Page 36]

Sorcery, X1B (2)
Spend only black mana on X. Drain Life deals X damage to target creature or player. You gain life equal to the damage dealt, but not more life than the player's life total before Drain Life dealt damage or the creature's toughness.1
Illus. Andrew Robinson
Crystal Keep Rulings Summaries
- You can put as much black mana as you want into this spell's X value, but you cannot gain more life than the creature's toughness. [D'Angelo 1996/07/01]
- You may gain up to the total toughness of the creature even if it was already damaged. [PPG Page 70]
- Cost reducers, such as Helm of Awakening can be used to reduce the X part of the mana cost. [WotC Rules Team 1997/06/01]
- Note - Also see X Costs, Rule G24.1.
- Note - Before errata, the X part of the cost was not part of the mana cost; it was part of the card's text. [Oracle 1999/07/01] This means the X cost is now part of the cost for things like Spell Blast.
- Note - The artist's name, Shuler, was misspelled on the Limited Edition and Unlimited Edition versions of this card.
