Fuse (You may cast one or both halves of this card from your hand.)

Illus. Nils Hamm

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 4/15/2013: If you're casting a split card with fuse from any zone other than your hand, you can't cast both halves. You'll only be able to cast one half or the other.
  • 4/15/2013: To cast a fused split spell, pay both of its mana costs. While the spell is on the stack, its converted mana cost is the total amount of mana in both costs.
  • 4/15/2013: You can choose the same object as the target of each half of a fused split spell, if appropriate.
  • 4/15/2013: When resolving a fused split spell with multiple targets, treat it as you would any spell with multiple targets. If all targets are illegal when the spell tries to resolve, the spell is countered and none of its effects happen. If at least one target is still legal at that time, the spell resolves, but an illegal target can't perform any actions or have any actions performed on it.
  • 4/15/2013: When a fused split spell resolves, follow the instructions of the left half first, then the instructions on the right half.
  • 4/15/2013: In every zone except the stack, split cards have two sets of characteristics and two converted mana costs. If anything needs information about a split card not on the stack, it will get two values.
  • 4/15/2013: On the stack, a split spell that hasn't been fused has only that half's characteristics and converted mana cost. The other half is treated as though it didn't exist.
  • 4/15/2013: Some split cards with fuse have two monocolor halves of different colors. If such a card is cast as a fused split spell, the resulting spell is multicolored. If only one half is cast, the spell is the color of that half. While not on the stack, such a card is multicolored.
  • 4/15/2013: Some split cards with fuse have two halves that are both multicolored. That card is multicolored no matter which half is cast, or if both halves are cast. It's also multicolored while not on the stack.
  • 4/15/2013: If a player names a card, the player may name either half of a split card, but not both. A split card has the chosen name if one of its two names matches the chosen name.
  • 4/15/2013: If you cast a split card with fuse from your hand without paying its mana cost, you can choose to use its fuse ability and cast both halves without paying their mana costs.
  • 4/15/2013: If you cast Alive/Well as a fused split spell, the Centaur creature token will count toward the amount of life you gain.

Legendary Creature — Human Soldier 4/4, WBG (3)

Whenever Anafenza, the Foremost attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on another target tapped creature you control.

If a nontoken creature an opponent owns would die or a creature card not on the battlefield would be put into an opponent's graveyard, exile that card instead.

Rarely at rest on the Amber Throne, Anafenza always leads the Abzan Houses to battle.

Illus. James Ryman

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 9/20/2014: Anafenza’s first ability can target any tapped creature you control. That creature doesn’t necessarily have to be attacking.
  • 9/20/2014: While Anafenza is on the battlefield, abilities that trigger whenever a nontoken creature your opponent owns dies won’t trigger, as that card will never reach that player’s graveyard. (Token creatures will still go to the graveyard briefly before ceasing to exist.)
  • 9/20/2014: If your opponent discards a creature card while Anafenza is on the battlefield, abilities that function when a card is discarded (such as madness) still work, even though that card never reaches a graveyard. In addition, spells or abilities that check the characteristics of a discarded card (such as Chandra Ablaze’s first ability) can find that card in exile.
  • 9/20/2014: Anafenza’s last ability cares only what the card would be in the zone it’s moving from, not what it would be in the graveyard. For example, if a land card you control becomes a creature due to an effect and then dies, the land card will be exiled. But if a creature card with bestow is an Aura when it would be put into the graveyard, it ends up in the graveyard.

Arboria Arboria English

World Enchantment, 2GG (4)

Creatures can't attack a player unless that player cast a spell or put a nontoken permanent onto the battlefield during his or her last turn.

Illus. Daniel Gelon

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 10/4/2004: This effect modifies the announcement of an attack, so it only works if it is on the battlefield at that time.
  • 10/1/2008: This has the supertype world. When a world permanent enters the battlefield, any world permanents that were already on the battlefield are put into their owners’ graveyards. This is a state-based action called the “world rule.” The new world permanent stays on the battlefield. If two world permanents enter the battlefield at the same time, they’re both put into their owners’ graveyards.
  • 10/1/2009: Arboria doesn’t stop creatures from attacking planeswalkers, regardless of what their controllers did or didn’t do during their last turns.
  • 10/1/2009: Arboria’s effect cares whether a player put a nontoken permanent onto the battlefield. It’s unusual for an ability to care who did the putting (as opposed to whose control the permanent entered the battlefield under), and requires careful reading of spells and abilities to see which player is instructed to put something onto the battlefield. For example, Exhume causes each player to return a creature card from his or her graveyard to the battlefield. If Exhume’s controller has no creature cards in his or her graveyard, but another player does, only that other player puts a permanent onto the battlefield. It doesn’t matter who controls the effect.
  • 10/1/2009: Arboria’s effect cares about the actions taken by players, not their results. If a player cast a spell during his or her last turn but that spell was countered, that player may still be attacked. The same is true if a player put a nontoken permanent onto the battlefield during his or her last turn, even if it’s no longer on the battlefield by the time that player is attacked.

Illus. Seb McKinnon

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 8/23/2016: Conspiracies are never put into your deck. Instead, you put any number of conspiracies from your card pool into the command zone as the game begins. These conspiracies are face up unless they have hidden agenda, in which case they begin the game face down.
  • 8/23/2016: A conspiracy doesn’t count as a card in your deck for purposes of meeting minimum deck size requirements. (In most drafts, the minimum deck size is 40 cards.)
  • 8/23/2016: You don’t have to play with any conspiracy you draft. However, you have only one opportunity to put conspiracies into the command zone, as the game begins. You can’t put conspiracies into the command zone after this point.
  • 8/23/2016: You can look at any player’s face-up conspiracies at any time. You’ll also know how many face-down conspiracies a player has in the command zone, although you won’t know what they are.
  • 8/23/2016: A conspiracy’s static and triggered abilities function as long as that conspiracy is face-up in the command zone.
  • 8/23/2016: Conspiracies are colorless, have no mana cost, and can’t be cast as spells.
  • 8/23/2016: Conspiracies aren’t legal for any sanctioned Constructed format, but may be included in other Limited formats, such as Cube Draft.
  • 8/23/2016: You name the card as the game begins, as you put the conspiracy into the command zone, not as you turn the face-down conspiracy face up.
  • 8/23/2016: There are several ways to secretly name a card, including writing the name on a piece of paper that’s kept with the face-down conspiracy. If you have multiple face-down conspiracies, you may name a different card for each one. It’s important that each named card is clearly associated with only one of the conspiracies.
  • 8/23/2016: You must name a Magic card. Notably, you can’t name a token (except in the unusual case that a token’s name matches the name of a card, such as Illusion).
  • 8/23/2016: If you play multiple games after the draft, you can name a different card in each new game.
  • 8/23/2016: As a special action, you may turn a face-down conspiracy face up. You may do so any time you have priority. This action doesn’t use the stack and can’t be responded to. Once face up, the named card is revealed and the conspiracy’s abilities will affect the game.
  • 8/23/2016: At the end of the game, you must reveal any face-down conspiracies you own in the command zone to all players.
  • 8/23/2016: A conspiracy with hidden agenda that has a triggered ability must be face up before that ability’s trigger condition is met in order for it to trigger. Turning it face up afterward won’t have any effect.
  • 8/23/2016: At the end of the game, you must reveal any face-down conspiracies you own in the command zone to all players. Notably, you can’t bluff conspiracies with hidden agenda by putting other cards into the command zone face down as the game starts.

  • 10/4/2004: You can take control of your opponent’s Tablet and in the trade you only have to give them back their Tablet.
  • 10/4/2004: If the card being targeted by the Bronze Tablet is removed before Tablet takes effect, then the Tablet ability is countered and it remains tapped.
  • 8/1/2008: If the tablet is not still on the battlefield when the ability resolves, it is not exiled. The other player still has the choice to pay 10 life, and you still become the owner of their card if they choose not to do so.

  • 4/15/2013: If you cast Beck/Call as a fused split spell, the triggered ability it creates will be in effect when the Bird creature tokens enter the battlefield. You'll draw up to four cards.
