Platinum Emperion Platinum Emperion English

Artifact Creature — Golem 8/8, 8 (8)

Your life total can't change. (You can't gain or lose life. You can't pay any amount of life except 0.)

It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death.

Illus. Chris Rahn

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 1/1/2011: The ability doesn't prevent damage. Rather, it changes the results of that damage. For example, if a creature with lifelink deals damage to you, you won't lose any life, but its controller will still gain that much life. Similarly, if a creature you control with lifelink deals damage to another player, that player will lose life but you won't gain any life. Notably, if a creature with infect deals damage to you, you'll get that many poison counters.
  • 1/1/2011: Abilities that trigger whenever damage is dealt to you will still trigger because that damage is still dealt, even though your life total doesn't change as a result.
  • 1/1/2011: Spells and abilities that would normally cause you to gain or lose life still resolve, but the life-gain or life-loss part simply has no effect.
  • 1/1/2011: You can't pay a cost that includes the payment of any amount of life other than 0 life.
  • 1/1/2011: If a cost would include causing you to gain life (like the alternative cost of an opponent's Invigorate does), that cost can't be paid.
  • 1/1/2011: Effects that would replace having you gain life with some other effect won't be able to be applied because it's impossible for you to gain life. The same is true for events that would replace having you lose life with some other effect.
  • 1/1/2011: Effects that replace an event with having you gain life (like Words of Worship's effect does) or having you lose life will end up replacing the event with nothing.
  • 1/1/2011: If an effect says to set your life total to a certain number that's different than your current life total, that part of the effect won't do anything.
  • 1/1/2011: If an effect would cause you to exchange life totals with another player, the exchange won't happen. Neither player's life total changes.
  • 1/1/2011: The ability won't preclude you from losing the game. It just precludes your life total from changing.

Trample

Cumulative upkeep—Sacrifice a land. (At the beginning of your upkeep, put an age counter on this permanent, then sacrifice it unless you pay its upkeep cost for each age counter on it.)

"It was big. Really, really, big. No, bigger than that. It was big!"
—Arna Kennerüd, Skyknight

Illus. Mark Tedin

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 10/1/2008: Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it's not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can't be made. For example, if a permanent with "cumulative upkeep {1}" has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either pay {4} or sacrifice the permanent.

Stormtide Leviathan Stormtide Leviathan English

Creature — Leviathan 8/8, 5UUU (8)

Islandwalk (This creature can't be blocked as long as defending player controls an Island.)

All lands are Islands in addition to their other types.

Creatures without flying or islandwalk can't attack.

Illus. Karl Kopinski

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 7/18/2014:
  • 7/18/2014: Stormtide Leviathan’s second ability causes each land on the battlefield to have the land type Island. Each land thus has the ability “{T}: Add {U} to your mana pool.” Nothing else changes about those lands, including their names, other subtypes, other abilities, and whether they’re legendary or basic.
  • 7/18/2014: If Stormtide Leviathan loses its abilities, all lands on the battlefield (including those that enter the battlefield later on) will still be Islands in addition to their other types and will still be able to tap to produce {U}. The way continuous effects work, Stormtide Leviathan’s type-changing ability is applied before the effect that removes that ability is applied.
  • 7/18/2014: Stormtide Leviathan’s third ability affects all creatures with neither flying nor islandwalk, regardless of who controls them. They can’t attack any player or planeswalker.
  • 7/18/2014: Islandwalk cares about lands with the land type Island, not necessarily lands named Island.

Tromokratis has hexproof unless it's attacking or blocking.

Tromokratis can't be blocked unless all creatures defending player controls block it. (If any creature that player controls doesn't block this creature, it can't be blocked.)

Illus. Matt Stewart

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 2/1/2014: The defending player may block Tromokratis with each creature he or she controls. If that player can’t, perhaps because one of those creatures is tapped, or chooses not to, Tromokratis can’t be blocked.
  • 2/1/2014: Tromokratis (like all attacking and blocking creatures) remains an attacking or blocking creature until the end of combat step is over. Ulamog's Crusher Ulamog's Crusher English

Creature — Eldrazi 8/8, 8 (8)

Annihilator 2 (Whenever this creature attacks, defending player sacrifices two permanents.)

Ulamog's Crusher attacks each turn if able.

"Whatever the Eldrazi's purpose is, it has nothing to do with something so insignificant as us."
—Nirthu, lone missionary

Illus. Todd Lockwood

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 6/15/2010: Annihilator abilities trigger and resolve during the declare attackers step. The defending player chooses and sacrifices the required number of permanents before he or she declares blockers. Any creatures sacrificed this way won't be able to block.
  • 6/15/2010: If a creature with annihilator is attacking a planeswalker, and the defending player chooses to sacrifice that planeswalker, the attacking creature continues to attack. It may be blocked. If it isn't blocked, it simply won't deal combat damage to anything.
  • 6/15/2010: In a Two-Headed Giant game, the controller of an attacking creature with annihilator chooses which of the defending players is affected by the ability. Only that player sacrifices permanents. The choice is made as the ability resolves; once a player is chosen, it's too late for anyone to respond.
  • 6/15/2010: If, during your declare attackers step, Ulamog's Crusher is tapped, is affected by a spell or ability that says it can't attack, or is affected by "summoning sickness," then it doesn't attack. If there's a cost associated with having Ulamog's Crusher attack, you aren't forced to pay that cost, so it doesn't have to attack in that case either.
  • 6/15/2010: If there are multiple combat phases in a turn, Ulamog's Crusher must attack only in the first one in which it's able to.
