Panglacial Wurm Panglacial Wurm English

Creature — Wurm 9/5, 5GG (7)

While you're searching your library, you may cast Panglacial Wurm from your library.

"Step lightly and we might be able to use it as a bridge."
—Ib Halfheart, goblin tactician

Illus. Jim Pavelec

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 7/15/2006: Panglacial Wurm’s ability works only while you’re searching your own library. The effect that caused you to search needs to say “search” and “library,” and you need to be looking through your own library for this to work. Examples of effects that let you cast Panglacial Wurm are Rampant Growth and Gifts Ungiven. Examples of effects that don’t are Bribery and Sage Owl.
  • 7/15/2006: Casting Panglacial Wurm while searching your library follows all the normal rules for casting a creature spell, except for timing (casting the Wurm this way always occurs during the resolution of another spell or ability) and what zone the Wurm is being cast from. The spell goes on the stack. You have to pay the Wurm’s mana cost and any applicable additional costs, which means you can activate mana abilities while you’re casting the Wurm while you’re searching your library.
  • 7/15/2006: After you cast Panglacial Wurm, you pick up the search effect where you left off. When the search effect finishes resolving, the active player gets priority with Panglacial Wurm on the stack. Any abilities that triggered when the spell was cast are put on the stack now.
  • 7/15/2006: If you have enough mana, you can cast multiple Panglacial Wurms during a single search effect.
  • 7/15/2006: A Panglacial Wurm that you cast while searching your library can’t be found by the search effect.
  • 7/15/2006: If you want to cast Panglacial Wurm while searching your library, you must do so before you find any cards with the search effect.
  • 7/15/2006: While searching your library, you must keep your library in the same order until you shuffle it. This order could matter if you tap Millikin for mana, for example, to pay for a Panglacial Wurm you cast from your library.

Creature — Eldrazi 9/9, 11 (11)

Annihilator 3 (Whenever this creature attacks, defending player sacrifices three permanents.)

Pathrazer of Ulamog can't be blocked except by three or more creatures.

No thought but hunger. No strategy but destruction.

Illus. Austin Hsu

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 6/15/2010: Annihilator abilities trigger and resolve during the declare attackers step. The defending player chooses and sacrifices the required number of permanents before he or she declares blockers. Any creatures sacrificed this way won’t be able to block.
  • 6/15/2010: If a creature with annihilator is attacking a planeswalker, and the defending player chooses to sacrifice that planeswalker, the attacking creature continues to attack. It may be blocked. If it isn’t blocked, it simply won’t deal combat damage to anything.
  • 6/15/2010: In a Two-Headed Giant game, the controller of an attacking creature with annihilator chooses which of the defending players is affected by the ability. Only that player sacrifices permanents. The choice is made as the ability resolves; once a player is chosen, it’s too late for anyone to respond.

When Phyrexian Dreadnought enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you sacrifice any number of creatures with total power 12 or greater.

Illus. Pete Venters

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 10/4/2004: The sacrifices are simultaneous, not one at a time.
  • 10/4/2004: Phasing in does not trigger “enters the battlefield” abilities, so you don’t have to sacrifice again if it phases in.
  • 7/15/2007: Reverted to its original wording, this now has an enters-the-battlefield triggered ability. During resolution of the triggered ability, you choose one option or the other.
  • 7/15/2007: If the Dreadnought is no longer on the battlefield when the triggered ability resolves, you may still choose either option.
  • 4/15/2013: If you are unable to sacrifice 12 power worth of creatures, then you cannot choose that option; in that case, you must sacrifice Phyrexian Dreadnought.

Platinum Emperion Platinum Emperion English

Artifact Creature — Golem 8/8, 8 (8)

Your life total can't change. (You can't gain or lose life. You can't pay any amount of life except 0.)

It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death.

Illus. Chris Rahn

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 1/1/2011: The ability doesn’t prevent damage. Rather, it changes the results of that damage. For example, if a creature with lifelink deals damage to you, you won’t lose any life, but its controller will still gain that much life. Similarly, if a creature you control with lifelink deals damage to another player, that player will lose life but you won’t gain any life. Notably, if a creature with infect deals damage to you, you’ll get that many poison counters.
  • 1/1/2011: Abilities that trigger whenever damage is dealt to you will still trigger because that damage is still dealt, even though your life total doesn’t change as a result.
  • 1/1/2011: Spells and abilities that would normally cause you to gain or lose life still resolve, but the life-gain or life-loss part simply has no effect.
  • 1/1/2011: You can’t pay a cost that includes the payment of any amount of life other than 0 life.
  • 1/1/2011: If a cost would include causing you to gain life (like the alternative cost of an opponent’s Invigorate does), that cost can’t be paid.
  • 1/1/2011: Effects that would replace having you gain life with some other effect won’t be able to be applied because it’s impossible for you to gain life. The same is true for events that would replace having you lose life with some other effect.
  • 1/1/2011: Effects that replace an event with having you gain life (like Words of Worship’s effect does) or having you lose life will end up replacing the event with nothing.
  • 1/1/2011: If an effect says to set your life total to a certain number that’s different than your current life total, that part of the effect won’t do anything.
  • 1/1/2011: If an effect would cause you to exchange life totals with another player, the exchange won’t happen. Neither player’s life total changes.
  • 1/1/2011: The ability won’t preclude you from losing the game. It just precludes your life total from changing.

  • 10/1/2008: Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it’s not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can’t be made. For example, if a permanent with “cumulative upkeep {1}” has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either pay {4} or sacrifice the permanent.

Islandwalk (This creature can't be blocked as long as defending player controls an Island.)

All lands are Islands in addition to their other types.

Illus. Karl Kopinski

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 7/18/2014: Stormtide Leviathan’s second ability causes each land on the battlefield to have the land type Island. Each land thus has the ability “{T}: Add {U} to your mana pool.” Nothing else changes about those lands, including their names, other subtypes, other abilities, and whether they’re legendary or basic.
  • 7/18/2014: If Stormtide Leviathan loses its abilities, all lands on the battlefield (including those that enter the battlefield later on) will still be Islands in addition to their other types and will still be able to tap to produce {U}. The way continuous effects work, Stormtide Leviathan’s type-changing ability is applied before the effect that removes that ability is applied.
  • 7/18/2014: Stormtide Leviathan’s third ability affects all creatures with neither flying nor islandwalk, regardless of who controls them. They can’t attack any player or planeswalker.
  • 7/18/2014: Islandwalk cares about lands with the land type Island, not necessarily lands named Island.
