Cliffrunner Behemoth Cliffrunner Behemoth English

Creature — Rhino Beast 5/3, 3G (4)

Cliffrunner Behemoth has haste as long as you control a red permanent.

Cliffrunner Behemoth has lifelink as long as you control a white permanent.

It's revered for its power, celebrated for its grace, and feared for the avalanches triggered by its thunderous feet.

Illus. Wayne Reynolds

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 2/1/2009: As long as at least one permanent you control is the specified color, the ability will "work" and grant this creature the bonus. Otherwise, it won't have the bonus.
  • 2/1/2009: Whether Cliffrunner Behemoth has haste matters only when attackers are declared. Once it's been declared as an attacker, it doesn't matter if it loses haste.
  • 2/1/2009: Whether Cliffrunner Behemoth has lifelink matters only when it deals damage (that is, at the point when its combat damage resolves, or at the point when a spell or ability that causes it to deal damage resolves). For example, if your only white permanent is a creature that receives lethal damage at the same time Cliffrunner Behemoth deals damage, the lifelink ability will still apply and you'll gain life.

Dauntless Escort Dauntless Escort English

Creature — Rhino Soldier 3/3, 1WG (3)

Sacrifice Dauntless Escort: Creatures you control are indestructible this turn.

Elspeth's squires do not seek advancement. For them, no knightly glory could surpass the glory of serving their champion.

Illus. Volkan Baga

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 5/1/2009: Once Dauntless Escort's ability resolves, it's continually in effect until the turn ends. Unlike similar spells and abilities that give all creatures you control flying or +1/+1, for example, this ability doesn't lock in what it applies to. That's because the effect states a true thing about a set of creatures, but doesn't actually change the *characteristics* of those creatures. As a result, whatever creatures you control at any point during the remainder of the turn are indestructible, including creatures that come under your control after Dauntless Escort's ability has resolved and creatures that lose all abilities.
  • 5/1/2009: If any creature leaves your control, Dauntless Escort's ability no longer applies to it. If such a creature had lethal damage on it, it's destroyed immediately as a state-based action.
  • 5/1/2009: Lethal damage and effects that say "destroy" won't cause an indestructible creature to be put into the graveyard. However, an indestructible creature can be put into the graveyard for a number of reasons. The most likely reasons are if it's sacrificed, if it's legendary and another legendary creature with the same name is on the battlefield, or if its toughness is 0 or less.

Mirror-Sigil Sergeant Mirror-Sigil Sergeant English

Creature — Rhino Soldier 4/4, 5W (6)

Trample

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control a blue permanent, you may put a token that's a copy of Mirror-Sigil Sergeant onto the battlefield.

"If I had many lives, I would give them all for Bant."

Illus. Chris Rahn

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 2/1/2009: The "intervening 'if' clause" means that (1) the ability won't trigger at all unless you control a permanent of the specified color, and (2) the ability will do nothing unless you control a permanent of the specified color at the time it resolves.
  • 2/1/2009: Normally, when a token is created by this ability, it will simply be a Mirror-Sigil Sergeant, so it'll also have the token-creating ability. (See the other ruling for weird exceptions.) At the beginning of your next upkeep, if you still control the original Sergeant, the token copy, and a blue permanent, you'll get two more token copies; the turn after that you'll get four; then eight; and so on.
  • 2/1/2009: Here's the detailed version of what happens. As the token is created, it checks the printed values of the Mirror-Sigil Sergeant it's copying -- or, if the Mirror-Sigil Sergeant whose ability triggered was itself a token, the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that put it onto the battlefield -- as well as any copy effects that have been applied to it. It won't copy counters on the Mirror-Sigil Sergeant, nor will it copy other effects that have changed Mirror-Sigil Sergeant's power, toughness, types, color, or so on.
  • 2/1/2009: If Mirror-Sigil Sergeant has left the battlefield by the time its triggered ability resolves, you'll still put a token onto the battlefield. That token has the copiable values of the characteristics of Mirror-Sigil Sergeant as it last existed on the battlefield.
  • 2/1/2009: Here are the weird exceptions. If any copy effects have affected the Mirror-Sigil Sergeant whose ability triggered, they're taken into account when the token is created. For example:
-- If Mirror-Sigil Sergeant's ability triggers, then Mirror-Sigil Sergeant temporarily becomes a copy of another creature before its ability resolves (due to Mirrorweave, perhaps), the token will be a copy of whatever creature the Mirror-Sigil Sergeant is currently a copy of. After the turn ends, the Mirrorweaved Mirror-Sigil Sergeant reverts back to what it was, but the token will stay as it is.
-- If the copy ability of a creature (such as Cemetery Puca, perhaps) makes it become a copy of Mirror-Sigil Sergeant and gain another ability, the token created by this creature at the beginning of your upkeep will be a Mirror-Sigil Sergeant with that additional ability.

You may have Rhox assign its combat damage as though it weren't blocked.

{2}{G}: Regenerate Rhox. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat.)

It's as solid as the club in its hand—and about as subtle.

Illus. Mark Zug

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 4/1/2008: If this creature is attacking a planeswalker, assigning its damage as though it weren't blocked means the damage is assigned to the planeswalker, not to the defending player.
  • 4/1/2008: When assigning combat damage, you choose whether you want to assign all damage to blocking creatures, or if you want to assign all of it to the defending player or planeswalker. You can't split the damage assignment between them.
  • 4/1/2008: You can decide to assign damage to the defending player or planeswalker even if the blocking creature has protection from green or damage preventing effects on it.
  • 4/1/2008: If blocked by a creature with banding, the defending player decides whether or not the damage is assigned "as though it weren't blocked".

Trample

Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)

"Momentum is a great ally."

Illus. Chris Rahn

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 10/1/2008: If you declare exactly one creature as an attacker, each exalted ability on each permanent you control (including, perhaps, the attacking creature itself) will trigger. The bonuses are given to the attacking creature, not to the permanent with exalted. Ultimately, the attacking creature will wind up with +1/+1 for each of your exalted abilities.
  • 10/1/2008: If you attack with multiple creatures, but then all but one are removed from combat, your exalted abilities won't trigger.
  • 10/1/2008: Some effects put creatures onto the battlefield attacking. Since those creatures were never declared as attackers, they're ignored by exalted abilities. They won't cause exalted abilities to trigger. If any exalted abilities have already triggered (because exactly one creature was declared as an attacker), those abilities will resolve as normal even though there may now be multiple attackers.
  • 10/1/2008: Exalted abilities will resolve before blockers are declared.
  • 10/1/2008: Exalted bonuses last until end of turn. If an effect creates an additional combat phase during your turn, a creature that attacked alone during the first combat phase will still have its exalted bonuses in that new phase. If a creature attacks alone during the second combat phase, all your exalted abilities will trigger again.
  • 10/1/2008: In a Two-Headed Giant game, a creature "attacks alone" if it's the only creature declared as an attacker by your entire team. If you control that attacking creature, your exalted abilities will trigger but your teammate's exalted abilities won't.

Rhox Faithmender Rhox Faithmender English

Lifelink (Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.)

If you would gain life, you gain twice that much life instead.

Rhoxes who live long enough to retire from war lend support with their extensive knowledge of combat injuries.

Illus. Wesley Burt

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 7/1/2012: If you control two Rhox Faithmenders, life you gain will be multiplied by four. Three Rhox Faithmenders will multiply any life gain by eight, and so on.
  • 7/1/2012: If an effect sets your life total to a specific number, and that number is higher than your current life total, the effect will cause you to gain life equal to the difference. Rhox Faithmender will then double that number. For example, if you have 3 life and an effect says that your life total "becomes 10," your life total will actually become 17.
  • 7/1/2012: In a Two-Headed Giant game, only Rhox Faithmender's controller is affected by it. If that player's teammate gains life, Rhox Faithmender will have no effect, even when that life gain is applied to the shared team life total.

Sigil Captain Sigil Captain English

Creature — Rhino Soldier 3/3, 1WWG (4)

Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, if that creature is 1/1, put two +1/+1 counters on it.

"One sigil awarded for valor, the other awarded for surviving Hellkite's Pass."

Illus. Howard Lyon

Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?

  • 5/1/2009: Sigil Captain's ability has an "intervening 'if' clause." That means (1) the ability won't trigger at all unless the creature that enters the battlefield under your control is 1/1, and (2) the ability will do nothing unless that creature is still 1/1 at the time the ability resolves.
  • 5/1/2009: For that reason, two Sigil Captains don't work well together. When a 1/1 creature enters the battlefield under your control, the abilities of both Sigil Captains will trigger. When the first resolves, two +1/+1 counters are put on the 1/1 creature. When the second resolves, it will do nothing because the creature that entered the battlefield is now 3/3.
  • 5/1/2009: Sigil Captain's ability checks a creature's initial power and toughness upon being put on the battlefield, so it will take into account counters that it enters the battlefield with and static abilities that may give it a continuous power boost once it's on the battlefield (such as the one on Glorious Anthem). After the creature is already on the battlefield, changing its power and toughness to 1/1 with a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability won't allow this ability to trigger; it's too late by then.
  • 5/1/2009: If, for some reason, Sigil Captain enters the battlefield as a 1/1 creature (due to a pair of Engineered Plagues, for example), it will cause its own ability to trigger.
