Fourth Edition Vierte Edition Quatrième Edition Quarta Edizione Cuarta Edición Quarta Edição
| Summon Abomination 2/6 |
3BB (5) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| At the end of combat, destroy all green and white creatures blocking or blocked by Abomination. |
- The color of the blocking/blocked creature is checked only at declaration of the block. If the creature is indeed green or white at that time, it will be destroyed at the end of the combat even if it changes color before the combat ends. [WotC Rules Team 1994/07/27]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
- Note - This card was creature type "Abomination" until Oracle 2007/10/01, when it became "Horror".
| Enchant Dead Creature |
1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| Take target creature from any graveyard and put it directly into play under your control with -1/-0. Treat this creature as though it were just summoned. If Animate Dead is removed, bury the creature in its owner's graveyard. |
- It follows all the rules for Aura (Enchant Creature) cards. [WotC Rules Team 1997/03/14] For example, it counts for abilities that interact with creature enchantments, such as Rabid Wombat. [Aahz 1997/06/06]
- You can Animate a creature which was discarded from a hand and therefore was never in play. [D'Angelo 1994/04/01]
- The creature comes out as if it were just played. Any X in the mana cost is zero (see Rule G24.1). So animating a Rock Hydra gives you a hydra with zero heads. [Mirage, Page 31]
- When putting a card into play that requires a definition for its value, such as with Minion of the Wastes, you do what is needed to define the value. [WotC Rules Team 1998/02/02] In the case of Minion of the Wastes, you pay life to define its values.
- The animated creature comes into play with summoning sickness (see Rule G19.39), so it cannot attack until it begins one of its controller's turns in play. [D'Angelo 1998/02/03]
- This is a targeted ability. Note that cards in the graveyard do not have Protection from Color abilities (see Rule 402.8). [D'Angelo 2002/12/19]
- If the creature card put into play has Protection from Black (or a similar effect that prevents Animate Dead from legally being attached), then it will fail to become attached and it as per Rule 212.4k, which states that an Aura trying to move onto an illegal permanent will stay where it is. Then the Animate Dead will go to the graveyard as an Aura that is not enchanting anything. This will sacrifice the creature as well, as stated by the card text. [D'Angelo 2007/10/20]
- If the creature phases out (see Rule 502.15) without the Animate Dead because Animate Dead has been affected by Spatial Binding, the Animate Dead is put into the graveyard but the creature is not. The creature will phase in perfectly normal since the Animate Dead ability did not destroy it. [Aahz 1997/02/16]
- It cannot move to a different creature using Aura moving effects. [D'Angelo 2007/09/08]
- Note - Also see Aura, Rule G1.30.
- Note - Also see Comes Into Play Abilities, Rule 410.10a.
- Note - Also see Put Into Play, Rule G16.33.
- Note - This card was of type "Enchantment" until Oracle 2007/09/01 when it became "Enchantment - Aura".
- Note - The Limited Edition, Unlimited Edition, Revised Edition, and Fourth Edition versions had this card as an Enchant Dead Creature. [D'Angelo 1997/04/11]
| Sorcery |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| Ashes to Ashes removes two target non-artifact creatures from the game and deals 5 damage to you. |
- Must have 2 targets at time of casting in order to be declared. [Duelist Magazine #3, Page 6]
- If one target is removed or becomes invalid after declaration, the other target is still affected. [bethmo 1994/09/15] You take the damage if at least one target is removed from the game. [D'Angelo 1995/05/17]

Fourth Edition (Rare) |
First Strike During your upkeep, pay {3}{B}{B}{B} or destroy Cosmic Horror. If you destroy Cosmic Horror in this way, it deals 7 damage to you. |
| Enchant Land |
2BB (4) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| Cursed Land deals 1 damage to target land's controller during his or her upkeep. |
| Summon Mummy 2/1 |
1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| If Mummy is put into the graveyard from play, remove it from the game. |
- The Mummy does go to the graveyard and trigger abilities (such as Soul Net) which watch for something going to the graveyard. It then leaves the game as a triggered ability (see Rule 404). [bethmo 1994/06/22]
- It does not leave the game if it goes to the graveyard from someplace other than "in play". This includes discarding from your hand or if the spell is countered. [bethmo 1994/06/27]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
- Note - This card was creature type "Mummy" until Oracle 2007/10/01, when it became "Zombie".
| Interrupt |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Add {B}{B}{B} to your mana pool. |
- This card, as with all instants cards, goes to the graveyard when it resolves. It does not stay in play. [D'Angelo 1999/05/01]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 2000/04/01.
- Note - In Mirage, Fifth Edition, Tempest, and Urza's Saga, this spell was of type Mana Source. In Ice Age, Fourth Edition (and before), it was of type Interrupt. It is now of type Instant.
| Enchantment |
BB (2) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| {B}{B}: Counter target green spell. Play this ability as an interrupt. |
| Interrupt |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| Change the color of target spell or target permanent to black. Costs to cast, tap, maintain, or use a special ability of target remain unchanged. |
- See Chaoslace for rulings.
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
- Note - This card was an Interrupt and now is an Instant. [Oracle 1999/09/03]
| Sorcery |
X1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Drain Life deals 1 damage to a target creature or player for each {B} you pay in addition to the casting cost. You then gain 1 life for each 1 damage dealt. You cannot gain more life than the toughness of the creature or the total life of the player Drain Life damages. |
- You can put as much black mana as you want into this spell's X value, but you cannot gain more life than the creature's toughness. [D'Angelo 1996/07/01]
- You may gain up to the total toughness of the creature even if it was already damaged. [PPG Page 70]
- Cost reducers, such as Helm of Awakening can be used to reduce the X part of the mana cost. [WotC Rules Team 1997/06/01]
- Note - Also see X Costs, Rule G24.1.
- Note - Before errata, the X part of the cost was not part of the mana cost; it was part of the card's text. [Oracle 1999/07/01] This means the X cost is now part of the cost for things like Spell Blast.
- Note - The artist's name, Shuler, was misspelled on the Limited Edition and Unlimited Edition versions of this card.
| Summon Skeletons 1/1 |
1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| {B}: Regenerate |
| Summon El-Hajjâj 1/1 |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| Gain 1 life for every 1 damage El-Hajjâj deals. You cannot gain more life in this way than the toughness of the creature or the total life of the player that El-Hajjâj damages. |
| Summon Raiders 2/3 |
1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| If you do not attack with Erg Raiders during your turn, it deals 2 damage to you at end of turn. Erg Raiders deals no damage to you the turn it comes into play on your side. |
- If unable to attack because it is tapped or something, it still deals 2 damage to the controller of this card. [bethmo 1994/06/01]
- Note - The Arabian Nights version of this card has two versions, one with a small dark circle behind the "1" in the mana cost (rarity C3) and one with a normal mana circle behind the cost (rarity C2).
- Note - This card was of creature type "Raider" and not "Human Warrior" until Oracle 2007/09/01.
| Enchant Land |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| Target land becomes a basic swamp. |
- A changed land is considered to be the new land type in all ways. This is not just a change of name. It changes the color of mana produced too. [Mirage, Page 58]
- Will not add or remove Snow-Covered nature from a land. [Duelist Magazine #6, Page 132]
- Note - Also see Aura, Rule G1.30.
- Note - This card was of type "Enchant Land" until Oracle 2005/08/01.
| Enchant Creature |
BB (2) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Target creature cannot be blocked except by black creatures and artifact creatures. |
| Summon Shade 0/1 |
2B (3) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| {B}: +1/+1until end of turn. |
- Note - The artist's name, Shuler, was misspelled on the Limited Edition and Unlimited Edition versions of this card.
| Enchantment |
2B (3) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| White spells cost an additional {3} to cast. White enchantments with activation costs require an additional {3} to use. |
- The additional mana is paid at the same time the spell/ability is announced. [bethmo 1996/06/20]
- The extra mana is not considered part of the mana cost (see Rule G13.7). A Spell Blast would still only require the original mana cost as X in order to counter the spell. [Aahz 1994/09/02]
- The extra mana is not considered part of the activation cost. It is a separate cost. [Aahz 1994/09/02]
- The extra mana is part of the play cost, so cost reducers like Helm of Awakening can be used to pay part of this cost.
| Enchantment |
3B (4) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| {B}: Pay 2 life to draw a card. Effects that prevent or redirect damage cannot be used to counter this loss of life. |
- You cannot spend more life on Greed than you have. [Duelist Magazine #3, Page 22]
| Instant |
XB (1) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Target creature gets +X/+0 until end of turn. |
| Summon Specter 2/2 |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
Flying An opponent damaged by Specter discards a card at random from his or her hand. Ignore this effect if opponent has no cards in hand. |
- Must do at least 1 point of damage to cause opponent to discard because the effect only happens if at least 1 damage remains unprevented. [WotC Rules Team 1994/02/07]
- If damage is redirected to opponent by some spell or ability and is not prevented, opponent must discard a card as if they were attacked directly. Equally, if damage is redirected away from the player, no card needs to be discarded. [WotC Rules Team 1994/02/07]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) banned this card from 1997/10/01 until 2005/08/20.
- Note - The artist's name, Shuler, was misspelled on the Limited Edition and Unlimited Edition versions of this card.
| Summon Efreet 3/3 |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
Flying During your upkeep, pay {B}{B} or bury Junún Efreet. |
| Summon Demon 7/7 |
4BBB (7) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
Flying, trample During your upkeep, sacrifice a creature. If you cannot sacrifice a creature, Lord of the Pit deals 7 damage to you. You cannot sacrifice Lord of the Pit to itself. |
- If you have a creature, you must sacrifice it. The 7 damage can only be taken if no creature can be sacrificed. [Duelist Magazine #3, Page 15]
- You can sacrifice a Lord of the Pit to a different Lord of the Pit. [Aahz 1994/09/14]
- If you have two Lords of the Pit, you can sacrifice them to each other. [D'Angelo 2001/04/16]
- You can select creatures with Protection from Black to be sacrificed. [Aahz 1994/04/01]
- Circle of Protection: Black can be used to prevent the damage. [bethmo 1994/03/01]
- Note - Also see Trample, Rule 502.9.
| Summon Lost Soul 2/1 |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Swampwalk |
- Note - Also see Landwalk, Rule 502.6.
- Note - This card was creature type "Lost Soul" until Sixth Edition, when it became "Minion". Then with Oracle 2007/10/01 it became "Spirit Minion".
| Instant |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| All creatures get -2/-0 until end of turn. |
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
| Sorcery |
XB (1) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| Target player discards X cards at random from his or her hand. If that player does not have enough cards, his or her entire hand is discarded. |
- Vintage tournaments (see Rule 801) restricted this card from 1994/08/01 to 1996/02/01. It was then banned from 1996/02/01 to 2000/10/01. It was then restricted from 2000/10/01 until 2007/06/20.
- Legacy tournaments (see Rule 802) have always banned this card.
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have always banned this card.
- Standard (Type 2) tournaments (see Rule 804) have banned this card since 1996/02/01. It was previously restricted from 1994/08/01 to 1996/02/01.
- Note - Also see X Costs, Rule G24.1.
| Summon Murk Dwellers 2/2 |
3B (4) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| When attacking and not blocked, Murk Dwellers gets +2/+0 until end of turn. |
- Note - This card was creature type "Murk Dwellers" until Oracle 1999/09/01, when it became "Murk-Dwellers". Then with Oracle 2007/10/01 it became "Zombie".
| Summon Shadow 1/1 |
BB (2) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| At the end of your upkeep, if Shadow is in your graveyard with at least three creature cards above it, you may return it to play. Shadow can attack the turn it comes into play. |
- Note that bringing the Shadow back into play from the graveyard is not a spell, it is an ability. It cannot be countered with something that counters spells. [bethmo 1994/05/14]
- Since it comes into play due to triggering at the beginning of upkeep, it is not possible to get an infinite loop with four Nether Shadows. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03]
- Note - In all printings it was of creature type "Shadow" but it is now of creature type "Spirit".
| Summon Nightmare X/X |
5B (6) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
Flying Nightmare has power and toughness each equal to the number of swamps its controller controls. |
- If you run out of Swamps, the Nightmare dies as a state-based effect (see Rule 420) right before the next player gains priority. [D'Angelo 1999/05/01]
- Note - This card was creature type "Nightmare" until Oracle 2007/10/01, when it became "Nightmare Horse".
- Note - The Beta printing version of this card has a blotch over the word Swamp that is not in any of the other printings.
| Enchant Creature |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Target creature does not untap during its controller's untap phase. That player may pay an additional {4} during his or her upkeep to untap it. Tap target creature when Paralyze comes into play. |
- It can only be untapped using Paralyze once per turn. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03]
- Two Paralyzes are not cumulative. Paying either one will untap the creature. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03]
- Paying the cost is optional. [D'Angelo 1994/04/01]
- The enchantment is a permanent. It does not leave once it is paid. This is a common mistake. [D'Angelo 1994/04/01]
- Because Paralyze is paid during upkeep, the creature does avoid restrictions on the untap phase such as Smoke, and can untap when Stasis is in effect, or untap around the Meekstone. [bethmo 1994/04/01]
- The creature becomes tapped just after Paralyze comes into play (see Rule 410.10a), not when it is declared. [Aahz 1994/07/29]
- Paralyze can be played on creatures which are already tapped. [D'Angelo 1994/06/01]
- Note - Also see Aura, Rule G1.30.
- Note - Also see Comes Into Play Abilities, Rule 410.10a.
- Note - This card was of type "Enchant Creature" until Oracle 2005/08/01.
| Enchantment |
2BB (4) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
At the end of any turn, if there are no creatures in play, bury Pestilence. {B}: Pestilence deals 1 damage to all creatures and players. |
- It is not targeted, so it will try to damage creatures with Protection from Black, but note that Protection from Color immediately reduces all damage of that color to zero, so the damage is prevented before it can actually hurt the creature. [D'Angelo 1998/02/03]
- Each activation is considered a new damage effect. An activation can only be 1 point of damage. [Duelist Magazine #12, Page 26]
- It will stay in play if there is a creature which is put into the graveyard at end of turn. This is because this ability will not trigger at all if there is at least one creature in play at that time. [D'Angelo 1999/05/01] Remember that the current player's "at end of turn" effects resolve after the other player's because they are put on the stack first.
- Note that "until end of turn" effects wear off after this, so a Mishra's Factory can keep Pestilence in play. [D'Angelo 1999/05/01]
- Applies to all players and their creatures in multiplayer games. [Duelist Magazine #4, Page 64]
| Summon Scorpion 1/1 |
2B (3) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| If Pit Scorpion damages a player, he or she gets a poison counter. If a player has ten or more poison counters, he or she loses the game. |
| Summon Rats X/X |
2B (3) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Plague Rats has power and toughness each equal to the number of Plague Rats in play, no matter who controls them. For example, if there are two Plague Rats in play, each has power and toughness 2/2. |
- "Plague Rats in play" means Plague Rats in play controlled by any and all players. [D'Angelo 1994/04/01]
- Only counts cards that are "Plague Rats" and not all cards that are "Creature - Rats" (or "Summon Rats" on older cards). [D'Angelo 1994/06/01]
| Summon Rag Man 2/1 |
2BB (4) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| {B}{B}{B}, {T}: Look at target opponent's hand. If that player has any creature cards in hand, he or she discards one of them at random. Use this ability only during your turn. |
- Note - This card was creature type "Rag Man" until Seventh Edition, when it became "Minion". Then with Oracle 2007/10/01, it became "Human Minion".
| Sorcery |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Take target creature from your graveyard and put it into your hand. |
- A "creature card" is a Creature card or Artifact Creature card. [D'Angelo 1999/05/01] Older cards of type Summon are also Creature cards.
- You must show the card you bring out of the graveyard to your opponent. [bethmo 1994/10/01]
- You can Raise Dead a creature which was discarded from your hand and was therefore never in play. [D'Angelo 1994/10/01]
- The creature being brought back is chosen on announcement and not on resolution of the spell because it is targeted. [Duelist Magazine #5, Page 123]
- Although the text isn't totally clear, the targeted creature card must be in your graveyard. [D'Angelo 2007/02/28]
| Summon Assassin 1/1 |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| {T}: Destroy target tapped creature. |
- If the creature is no longer tapped (it untaps by Twiddle or other effect) when the Assassin is resolved, then the ability is countered. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03]
- You can target creatures you control. [bethmo 1994/05/01]
- Cannot target itself because you choose the target at the same time you are tapping him. At that time he is not yet tapped. [D'Angelo 1995/07/18]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) banned this card from 1999/10/01 to 2005/08/20 because it was not in a legal set.
- Note - This card was of creature type "Assassin" and not "Human Assassin" until Ninth Edition and Oracle 2005/08/01.
| Summon Zombies 2/2 |
2B (3) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Summon Ghoul 2/2 |
3B (4) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
At the end of each turn, put a corpse counter on Scavenging Ghoul for each creature put into the graveyard during that turn. {0}: Remove a corpse counter from Scavenging Ghoul to regenerate it. |
- The Ghoul still gets to claim counters even if it enters play after the creatures died. [bethmo 1994/04/01]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
- Note - This card was creature type "Ghoul" until Oracle 2007/10/01, when it became "Zombie".
| Summon Vampire 4/4 |
3BB (5) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
Flying Put a +1/+1 counter on Sengir Vampire each time a creature is put into the graveyard the same turn Sengir Vampire damaged it. |
- Gets counters when creatures go to the graveyard. If it dies at the same time as a creature it killed, it does not get the counter. If it regenerates or otherwise lives past the creature going to the graveyard, it gets the counter. [bethmo 1994/06/01]
- Does not get a counter if it damages a creature and that creature's permanent is no longer a creature at the time it is put in the graveyard. [WotC Rules Team 1997/06/01] [Duelist Magazine #19, Page 31]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) banned this card from 1999/10/01 until 2002/03/01, when it was put back into print.
| Instant |
1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| All damage done to you so far this turn is instead retroactively applied to a target creature you control. Further damage this turn is treated normally. |
- This is not damage prevention or redirection. It actually is life gain and newly dealt damage. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03]
- The damage dealt to the creature is black and is from this spell, not the original source. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03]
- You cannot use Simulacrum on Loss of Life, just damage. [D'Angelo 1995/06/01]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
| Summon Sorceress 1/1 |
1BB (3) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
| {T}: Target creature other than Sorceress Queen becomes 0/2 until end of turn. |
- Creatures with power or toughness calculated (such as Nightmare or Keldon Warlord) have their power/toughness overridden to be 0/2 so their normal ability to have their power/toughness recalculated won't do anything useful while the Sorceress effect is upon that creature. Same goes for Angry Mob. [bethmo 1996/01/30]
- Note - This card was creature type "Sorceress" until Oracle 2007/10/01, when it became "Human Wizard".
| Enchant Creature |
BB (2) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| Put a -0/-2 counter on target creature every time it becomes tapped. These counters remain even if Spirit Shackle is removed. |
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.
- Note - Also see Aura, Rule G1.30.
- Note - This card was of type "Enchant Creature" until Oracle 2005/08/01.
| Instant |
1B (2) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Bury target non-black, non-artifact creature. |
- As with all targeted spells, the requirements for targeting are checked when declaring the effect and when resolving it. So, if the creature becomes a black or artifact creature after this spell is declared and before it is resolved, then the spell is countered. [D'Angelo 1999/05/01]
| Summon Uncle Istvan 1/3 |
1BBB (4) |
Fourth Edition (Uncommon) |
| All damage done to Uncle Istvan by creatures is reduced to 0. |
- Works even on damage from activated abilities of creatures such as the Prodigal Sorcerer ability. [Aahz 1994/08/04]
- The creature type is "Uncle-Istvan" which is considered one word. Before errata, it was two words, "Uncle Istvan". [D'Angelo 1999/09/20]
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) banned this card from 1999/10/01 until 2006/10/20 when it became part of Time Spiral.
- Note - This card was of creature type "Uncle-Istvan" and not "Human" until Oracle 2006/10/01 and Time Spiral.
| Enchant Creature |
B (1) |
Fourth Edition (Common) |
| Target creature gets +2/+1. |
- Note - Also see Aura, Rule G1.30.
- Note - The Fourth Edition version of this card has a modified version of the card art used in Limited Edition through Revised Edition. The red flaming pentagram in the background was removed.
- Note - This card was of type "Enchant Creature" until Ninth Edition and Oracle 2005/08/01.

| Target artifact becomes an artifact creature with power and toughness each equal to its casting cost; target retains all of its original abilities. Animate Artifact does not affect artifact creatures. |
- Animated artifacts are subject to the effects of summoning sickness (see Rule G19.39). [Mirage, Page 14] Remember that all permanents get summoning sickness, but that only creatures are affected by it. So whether or not you can use the animated artifact right away depends on whether or not it has summoning sickness. It will not have summoning sickness if it has been in play on your side (creature or not) since the beginning of your most recent turn.

- Since this is an instant, your opponent may use instants in response to the casting of this spell. Note that such spells and abilities will be resolved before the mana pool is emptied by the Mana Short. [bethmo 1994/06/01] This makes it useless as a countermeasure for spells. - Any cards which might trigger off a card becoming tapped will trigger. Thus, a Psychic Venom on a land that becomes tapped will cause 2 damage. [D'Angelo 1995/03/12] Similarly, if the card itself triggers on its own tapping, such as City of Brass, the ability will still happen. [D'Angelo 1995/04/12]
- The decision to tap or untap is made on resolution. [D'Angelo 2000/03/03] This is not a modal spell.

- Casting Magical Hack on Volcanic Eruption will not allow you to change the targets of the spell because you chose the targets when the spell was declared and before a Hack can interrupt it. The Hack will just cause it to be countered since the targets will be illegal. [WotC Rules Team 1994/02/07] It may not be countered on multilands that are half mountain and half of the new land type specified.
- Extended tournaments (see Rule 803) have banned this card since 1999/10/01.

- You cannot pay life points you don't have. In other words, you cannot Channel yourself below zero life. [D'Angelo 1995/08/10]

- The ability destroys the creature at the end of the combat, which is after all first strike and normal damage dealing is done. This means that a creature may have to regenerate twice to survive the combat, once from damage and once again at end of combat. [D'Angelo 1996/12/09]

| Summon Gaea's Liege X/X |
3GGG (6) |
Fourth Edition (Rare) |
Gaea's Liege has power and toughness each equal to the number of forests you control; when Gaea's Liege attacks, these are instead equal to the number of forests defending player controls. {T}: Target land becomes a basic forest until Gaea's Liege leaves play. |
- The power/toughness are continuously being calculated and will change whenever your number of forests change. It also changes whenever this card starts and ends an attack. For example, if you have 5 Forests and your opponent has 10 Forests, the Liege is 5/5 normally, and 10/10 when attacking. If it takes 7 damage during an attack, then once the attack is over, it reverts to being 5/5 with 7 damage and will be killed. [bethmo 1994/04/01]
- When being declared as an attacker, use the "not attacking" power and toughness. It only changes after declaration is complete. [DeLaney 2000/03/13]
- A changed land is considered to be the new land type in all ways. This is not just a change of name. It changes the color of mana produced too. [Mirage, Page 58]
- Will not add or remove Snow-Covered nature from a land. [Duelist Magazine #6, Page 132]

Target creature can attack the turn it comes into play on your side. {0}: During your turn, untap target creature Instill Energy enchants. Use this ability only once each turn. |

- Any enchantments (or other effects) which are on the creature that would cause it to not be untapped (or have a cost to be untapped) during untap step do not in any way hinder or imply a cost to use this card's ability to untap once during the turn. [bethmo 1994/04/01]

| All creatures able to block target creature must do so. Lure does not prevent a creature from blocking more than one creature if blocker has that ability. If blocker is forced to block more creatures than it is allowed to, defender chooses which of these creatures to block, but must block as many creatures as allowed. |
- Lure does not give a creature the ability to block the Lured creature, it just forces those creatures which are already able to block the Lured creature to do so. [D'Angelo 1994/06/01]
- Opponent does not have to power special effects in an attempt to make all creatures block the Lured creature. For example, you do not need to power a Goblin Balloon Brigade to block a flying creature with Lure, but if you do power it, the Brigade must block. [bethmo 1994/08/01] More specifically, even a cost of zero mana is an optional cost you can choose not to pay. [WotC Rules Team 2000/02/16]
